Miscalleanous Screenshots

This section deals with screenshots that can't be clearly assigned to one of the different versions or just don't belong there, but are still interesting.

For now we've provided a couple of promotional screenshots by Blizzard released in 1996 and a few others. These shots have either been made with an early version (note the lack of dynamical lighting on the shots) or with a special version, to make the shots look "better" (I don't think so).
There are some hints that lead to the conclusion that these shots were made in mid '96 with an early version of Diablo that just featured the warrior-graphics. Some people might say: "But sometimes we see the rogue and the sorceror graphics, too! So these shots can't be so old!" True, but as we know from the alpha screenshot analysis, at least two pre-rogue/sorceror shot have been altered to feature the "new" character classes graphics. So we can assume that for example shot Nr1 was made with an early version of Diablo and the Rogue was a simple cut+paste job to reflect the current state of the game mor accurately.

The action on this shot looks so good, I don't think it's possible to create a situation similar to this in real-time. The Diablo versions without lighing didn't have the rogue available, so she was put in here later. The warrior using a bow is most likely the old archer class.
The Rogue from this screenshot was also used in the alteration of the fourth screenshot on this page.

Another artificial "screenshot" showing all three character classes. The Archer, the Caster (true class name unknown) and the Fighter.

A nice shot...might even be a "real" screenshot actually made ingame.

Now it's getting silly. We know that Blizzard used older promo-pictures and altered them to reflect the changes on the game.
Shot1) The left shot is the original screenshot from an old version of the game where all character classes looked like the warrior.
Shot2) This can be found on some retail boxes of the game. It's the screenshot above, but with the rogue, more enemies, no caster and it's mirrored. The most weird part is the warrior in the lower part of the screen. Look at his face (and arm)! Now that's false advertising ;)
Shot3) This is just Shot2 mirrored again so you can compare it better to Shot1.

Warrior and "Sorceror" fighting in the caves.

The caster kicking some Night-Clan's butt with the Nova Spell.

A multiplayer Party in the SINGLE PLAYER level of Leoric? Either a fake shot (as done before) or the proof that all sp-quests were supposed to be included in MP (see the warning-screenshot in the beta section).

A beautiful shot...but it's fake. Rogue+Sorceror never stood there. Compare it to the original screenshot next to it!

Blizzard really likes the nova spell, and I can't blame them. Back then this spell looked really spectacular, especially with the lighting feature implemented in later versions of the game. Maybe they grew sick of this spell and removed the books ;)

Another shot, later altered by Blizzard. The unaltered version can still be found at the official Diablo page, while the altered version is being shown on most retail boxes. Both the number of enemies and the number of characters has tripled.
Note, again, the lack of lighting and the old lava.

A caster and two other characters onscreen. This is a pretty lame cut+paste Job, they just put in a sorcerer for the retail-box version of this screenshot.

nice level formation, "Ice Stalker" skeletons and if you look close you see a corpse of a yellow fallen in the east corner of the room. Thanks to Ychiju for confirming this! A detailed analysis will be here soon!

This shot can be found on the net in some old Diablo previews. See the Alpha1 section for the "rare" version of this shot.

This can be found on the WarCraft2 CD Blizdemo.EXE Diablo Trailer. It looks awesome and features unused wall tiles, floor tiles and dungeon formations. And the skeleton has been edited into the picture poorly, or the shadow wasn't added to the skeleton graphic yet. Not unlikely, because this screenshot is incredibly old.

Left: Original shot. Right: Official, modified shot.
Another screenshot from the early alpha days when multiplayer wasn't up for discussion and the "Ice Stalker" skeletons still existed. What makes this shot special, just like the 8th screenshot on this page, is that Blizzard has altered it later to reflect the addition of the multiplayer part. Go and grab your Diablo CD/Box and take a look at the back of it. There you'll find the screenshots shown on the right. Talking about false advertising! These skeletons don't show up anywhere in the game and, again, the level formation cannot be generated by the newer versions of the game.
If you take a closer look at the two screenshots you can see how Blizzard pasted the sorceror over the warrior. The sorceror's shadow is covering a small part of the warrior.

Our latest addition: A rare shot featuring an old version of Diablo. No lighting and you can see the old lava in the caves. Besides this one, there is only one other shot showing the old "alpha" lava graphics.
Another extremely interesting detail about this shot is the fact that it's one of three shots, showing the turn-based version of Diablo, and the only one using a red targeting cursor instead of a yellow one (see the Alpha1 section for the other two). This is another small step to discover the exact use of the turn-based cursors.
Note: You have to look carefully, to find the cursor (due to the low resolution of the image). It's in front of the Warrior, under the dying overlord.
